Colour Changes in Embroidery Threads Due to Chlorine
Discolouration of embroidery threads can often be caused by the use of chlorine-containing products, such as bleach or chlorine-based stain removers, during washing or spot cleaning.
SULKY® threads meet high standards for colour fastness, including resistance to washing, light and perspiration. However, chlorine-based additives are not recommended for artificial machine-silk threads, as they can cause colour changes.
The effect of chlorine can vary depending on the colour, concentration of chlorine and washing temperature. As each colour contains different dye components, some colours may be more affected than others, and discolouration can sometimes occur only in parts of an embroidery.
Chlorine can also damage the viscose fibres themselves at high concentrations, even if the dye were completely chlorine-resistant.
For items such as workwear that may be exposed to chlorine or harsh washing conditions, we recommend POLY 40 chlorine-resistant polyester embroidery thread.
